More than a school...our links with the Church and the wider community

'Overthorpe is more than a school- we are the heart of our community.'

At Overthorpe we have extremely strong links with our local church, St Michael and All Angels. We walk down to Church as a whole school regularly, holding services to come together as one at Harvest, Remembrance, Christingle, Christmas and Easter times.  At these times we worship, we sing, we share work done in school and we reflect on lessons shared by our Reverend Debbie Nash ("Deb the Rev")

We visit the Church as part of our curriculum each year in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.  In Key Stage One we learn all about special places as part of our RE lessons. In Key Stage Two we investigate the local history, with resources from the Savile Chapel which is located within the Church building, the Church Yard, The Mining Disaster Memorial and the War Memorials. Our visits are supported by a group of Church volunteers who teach us.

Volunteers from "Hand to Mouth" visit us in school from the Church and take groups from all year groups. They lead workshops on Lent, the Trinity, Easter and Transition at various points throughout the year.

Deb the Rev visits us in school and leads whole school worship, telling us stories from the Bible and sharing their lessons.

Our Neighbourhood Nest is proud to be partly funded by our Church. Buggy Praise sessions are held there and Church groups meet in our building.
