Religious Education

In Church of England schools, where pupils and staff come from all faiths and none, religious education (RE) is a highly valued academic subject that enables understanding of how religion and beliefs affect our lives. At the heart of RE in church schools is the teaching of Christianity and pupils also learn about other faiths and world views. At Overthorpe, we choose to also learn about the religions of Islam and Sikhism, as our staff, Governors and stakeholders felt that these most reflect our local neighbours and families.

We have a two year rolling programme of RE units due to our mixed age classes. This ensures that RE work is not repeated and that progress in the subject is maximised.

Please click here to read the Church of England's Statement of Entitlement for Religious Education.

Our RE planning follows the Leeds Diocese syllabus and our teachers have undertaken training in its' delivery. We are supported by Diocesan school support partners to develop our RE teaching practice at least once each term.

We take most of our RE planning from the resource "Understanding Christianity".

Understanding Christianity is a resource to support the teaching of Christianity in religious education in all schools.

  • Develops pupils' own thinking and understanding of Christianity.
  • Explores the significant theological concepts within Christianity as part of developing pupils wider religious, theological and cultural literacy.
  • Supports teachers in developing their own knowledge and understanding of Christianity theology to be able to teach with confidence.
