"We nurture the courage and skills to fly higher than the flock ..."
Maths is a vital part of our "Curriculum Fit for Overthorpe" and is an essential life skill. All children have a daily maths lesson, working towards meeting an age appropriate learning objective, differentiated to their needs. These lessons follow the National Curriculum 2014, with support materials and structure provided by the White Rose Maths Hub and Classroom Secrets. We use a range of teaching strategies, practical materials, tasks and resources to support our maths lessons; and wherever possible we try to use our outdoor learning areas to support our teaching and engage our pupils.
In addition to this, during the school day, pupils will carry out practical short mental maths tasks as they enter the classroom for registration; they may carry out maths tasks to consolidate learning during other subjects such as science, history or geography and they are encouraged to work on calculations or TT Rockstars as part of their homework. Mr Swain, our maths leader, often sets us battles on TT Rockstars and hands out certificates in Learning Champions assemblies.
We promote Maths in school with whole school maths days such as NSPCC Number Day, Bounce like a Superhero Day and Rockstar Day, where we dress up and play maths or number games all day to raise money for charities or local initiatives.
As catchup, some children may also undergo the Maths interventions "First Class @ Number" or "Success @ Arithmetic". These interventions support children's fluency in number skills and place value and are led by our Teaching Assistants.
If you would like any further information about our Maths curriculum, please contact Mr Swain via the School office on 01924 325300.
Our Calculations Policy is below and there are pupil videos showing how to carry out the four operations at different levels on our website.
