Maths is a very important aspect of the curriculum and a vital life skill. We take maths seriously and therefore offer other opportunities during the school day to make sure our maths brains are challenged in different ways. When the children arrive at school they are prepared for the working day by accessing a mental arithmetic scheme, differentiated to meet their needs. We practice our times tables daily and the children are awarded bronze, silver or gold depending how much they understand. The KS2 children have access to ‘Mathletics’ which is an online maths based activity and games package. We launch competitions throughout the year to keep interest at a high level, prizes this year have included winning family cinema tickets!
We are raising expectations in the classroom by addressing personal targets daily, giving context to learning, differentiating oral/mental starters – warm-up and making sure there is a high standard of work and presentation in every session. Teachers and support staff ensure that maths teaching is closely tailored to children’s individual needs through regular assessment and setting of next step targets alongside the main maths lesson each day.
As part of our commitment to family learning we run regular information sessions and provide opportunities for parents to come into school. In the last year we have organised a whole school maths Treasure Hunt with parents, ‘Cream tea and Calculation’ parental workshop which familiarised parents with the calculation methods we use in school, in order to assist children with homework help and a range of competitions to encourage mathematical learning at home.
